Rebecca Bluestone is a studio trained tapestry weaver and teacher with a full-time weaving and dye studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her interest in the textile arts of the Southwest brought her to New Mexico to study and apprentice with renowned Hopi weaver, Ramona Sakiestewa. The techniques Bluestone uses come from the weaving traditions of the three cultures of the Southwest; Native American, Spanish and contemporary European influences.
Bluestone has received numerous commissions and exhibits her work nationally in galleries, museums, universities and juried exhibitions. Her work is regularly seen in national publications including, The New York Times, American Craft, FiberArts, Southwest Art and Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot.
“My work very much evolves out of the spiritual geography of the Southwest. For me there exists in the act of weaving a condition I call ‘contemplative repetition’, which, because of its meditative quality, opens up my more intuitive side and becomes the source that informs my work. In this way the act of weaving becomes an integral part of my creative expression. Over the years I have found that this idea of ‘contemplative repetition’ has emerged spontaneously as a recurring theme in my series of tapestries.”
